The leader of COPE is former South African defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota and he joins Sir David from Johannesburg. COPE, the new political party set up in South Africa to challenge the ruling African National Congress, has already made an impact. The 'Congress of the People' has been formed by a large number of breakaway ANC officials, dismayed by tribal splits in the ANC and the forced resignation of President Thabo Mbeki. The response of the ANC has been to consider bringing forward next year's general election to March.

  • he is not very bright but at least his principles are in the wright path you have my vote

  • Listen to this idiot . . . how dare he accuse Zuma of not tackling tribalism, when the ANC under Mbeki was flooded with only Xhosa's in high positions . . . COPE will never even make gains on the DA let alone the ANC . . . i'm afraid ZUMA is gonna prove his critics utterly wrong . . .

  • I just hope the majority of South Africans see sense and vote for COPE or the DA to save SA from becoming a one party state dictatorship. Learn from the rest of Africa, place all the power in one party and there is a bleak future. Lekota speaks sense.

  • this guy looks like he has some sense........f*ck Zuma!!!!

  • This fool is a joke Mbeki employed him 2 do damage 2 the ANC now they dont need him traitor.

  • The biggest victory of COPE will be that there is now a black finger pointing at the ANC's lawlessness & failures. Hopefully COPE will not be buying submarines for billions while there is an AIDS & housing crisis. Not only did they buy submarines, but now there is a legal probe into the transaction. Sanitation & water quality is now worse than when they came into power. Massive failure, time for change.

  • Any formation built on policy, ideas for contestaition will create a strong democracy in South Africa, but hate and anger does not add any value. It is every South Africans dream to have a strong opposition, but everybody seems to insult the ANC leadership. Nobody has heard what COPE stands 4.

  • lets face it..the DA will never gain a lot of power but COPE actually has a chance. Even though the democrats have a majority of the seats in congress, there are still enough republicans to keep them in check and not let them go overboard. There needs to be a party in SA that keeps the ANC in check.

  • This was a what if question. I honestly want to know what the ANC would do. And dont get so arrogant and complacement. You dont know whats going to happen in the future. Even if they don't win a majority in your parliament, they would still be a threat to the ANC's dominance and would actually be a viable opposition party. A strong opposition is essential for a democracy.

  • ANC will rule RSA for many years to come, take it easy on crack and enjoy the US.
