Landing craft are boats and seagoing vehicles used to convey a landing force (infantry and vehicles) from the sea to the shore during an amphibious assault. Most renowned are those used to storm the beaches of Normandy, the Mediterranean, and many Pacific islands during WWII.

  • My partner's Grandfather just passed away last month (We're DoD Industrial Facility Guards). His Grandpa was a Higgins boat driver and made three runs on D-Day! He said that the only combat he saw in the whole 3 years he was in the service was that one day, but that day was the LONGEST day of his life!

May God Bless all the old vets, living and passed...

  • The reason for LC use on D Day by the US was that the Buffaloes were not good sea craft ideal for reef crossing and calmer waters of the far east Island hopping but not suited to the English channel they were used on the Rhine crossing and the Walkeran island invasion on the Antwerp approachs but were not popular as they were very noisy & unreliable, indeed my father spent many hours after the initial assault on the Walkrans towing in busted Buffaloes and picking up swamped crews & commandoes

  • Shit! all the Landing craft were slow! bUT WE GOT THE "STUF TO SHORE"

  • @trackend The Higgins boats were the first Navy small boats to control engine speed and direction without the engineer.Have you ever been to the D-Day Museum in New Orleans, which is built on the old Higgins Boat factory site?

  • @Krisg9994 MacArthur didn't know to plan for tidal changes. The miracle isn't that they were able to get the Marines and Army ashore but that they were able to get them to the assigned landing beaches to begin with.

  • they kinda got stuck in the mud at ichon korea.... or inchon or whatever.

  • exactly... the us was using Amtracks in the pacific theatre but still choise to use the higgens on dday in europe

  • I agree the US Higgins is better known but the fact is the majority of personel carrying assault landing craft was the British LCA on D Day. The US had more film units than anyone else this is why most news reel footage of WW2 contains US forces and tends to give the impression that majority of landng craft equipment was US produced where as in fact most of the US naval landing vessels remained in the far east for the Island hoping actions across the pacific

  • I have to say, The most most famous landing craft were the model used for D-Day by the United States Armed Forces.

  • id it hadnt been for this, d-day would have fucked up.
