Every now and then we come across a roofing design that is poor and just destined to leak. Such is the case with the roof in this video.

The leak in this roof was treated by another roofer that poured tar in the corner, and of course, THAT didn't work; so the homeowner found us on YouTube (imagine that) and asked us to help.

We will fix the situation by redirecting the water around the corner with a "cricket", a diverter usually found on the upper side of chimneys. Same principal here -- the "cricket" WILL work.

With a little magic from some "Ice and water shield", some custom formed and strategically placed aluminum flashing, and a little "TLC", we'll have this leak beaten in no time.

Stay tuned for video part 2 where you'll get to see the fix in action -- and the final result . . .

  • you started pretty good until u wanted to install the same kind of roofing shingles (3-tabs)

I suggest to install a modified bitumen self stick.

  • @2miangels Thanks for your note; and you're right, modified bitumen would be a great alternative. In this case, the customer preferred the shingle look for consistency, so we opted for a layer of self stick "ice and water shield" and then added the shingles for the aesthetics.

The "ice and water shield" provides nearly the same protection as the modified bitumen, and the shingles add the weathering capability and good looks.

  • @MdRoofingServices I was looking on the video and I notice the " j" channel trim on the siding ,I don't undertand why the siding installers have to bring the trim all the way down to the shingles on those kind of corners.

by the way you do excellent work and you are not the kind of "roofer" that jump on the roof with a bucket of plastic cement to patch a leak.

some people do not understand between a roof repair and a" patch".

  • @2miangels I agree with you, the siding guys try more for "looks" than "function" -- and I think it would actually look better the way you've described . . .

Getting the trades to work together can be a real challenge for a builder. For example we all know that the roof should be installed first; but that doesn't always happen. And if it's summer in our area, the siding guys will usually scuff up a hot roof when it is put on first!

Thanks for your good words, too. Much appreciated. BT

  • You guys should show the finished cricket. People not used to what you are discussing are saying WTF?

  • That was a tough problem to solve, but Bill came up with the answer.
