Milk of Magnesia (aka Magnesium Hydroxide) is commonly found in the laxative and antacid aisle of your local pharmacy. It's also a great topical treatment for the skin!

MoM can be applied daily as a "tonic drying to powder" to absorb oil and cut sweat and shine on your skin, leaving you with a matte finish. This can also act as a primer for your makeup so your eyeshadows, blushes etc can stay smooth on your face and not clump or bleed from facial oils.

Long-term, Mom helps to clear the skin of acne:
First, Magnesium (Mg2+) is anti-inflammatory and has a calming effect on the skin and body, decreasing stress-related oil-production.
Secondly, the alkaline hydroxide ions (OH-) neutralize the acidic environment on your skin, preventing the acid-loving, oil-loving bacteria from thriving in your pores and creating new pimples.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!
Magnesium can be absorbed through the skin; DON'T USE THIS if you have kidney problems, otherwise you may over time overdose on magnesium!

  • why does this not work in my skin. after hearing nothing but glowing reviews for milk of magnesia as an oil controlling primer i was so excited to try it. My skin is a bit less oily when using it but not that much. I have oily skin but not crazy oily, well i didnt think i did. really didapointed i guess just gona have to deal with oily skin

  • @loubailey90 I don't use it as a primer, I just use it instead of wearing makeup. If I put the milk of magnesia on my T-zone and then put a foundation over that, then I find it makes me feel a little greasy too (but that could just be the cream foundation I used to wear). It doesn't completely stop the oil production, just absorbs it enough to keep my nose matte and help my glasses not slide off my nose, lol. But don't expect it to create miracles.

  • I just want to say that you are amazing :) I love how detailed and in depth you are at everything you do. The way you disseminate information is exactly what I look for when I get into "research mode." Thank you for your time, effort and dedication :)

  • @icowle85 I'm glad you liked it! :) It makes me smile when someone actually appreciates the work I put into these videos.

  • @bishonenrancher I was wondering what the most effective way to apply was....cotton round, cotton ball, hands?

And, do you incorporate this into a greater skin care routine? If so, where do you place it in the line up? Thanks :)

(My name is Irene, btw :) )

  • @icowle85 Hi Irene. :) I use my fingertips to apply it, and just pat it into my nose/ forehead and occasionally my shoulders since I get some bad breakouts there. :S My skincare routine is pretty simple, I wash with Biore "Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser", then just use extra virgin olive oil for a moisturizer, then MOM on the T-zone, after which I'll just use concealer under the eyes, lip stain/gloss and eyeliner and that's it. Pretty much what I do everyday. :)

  • Wooohoooo! Milk of Magnesia ;-) I actually used to use this stuff underneath my makeup all the time when I worked at Disneyland, underneath the hot sun, to prevent me from becoming the ultimate greaseball (and minimize my pores), haha :-P Fantastic video as always, Lucy! LOVE your scientific explanation - YAY for osmosis, hehe! <3!
