-Swing Mister Charlie-
"Stompin' at the Savoy" b-side. New York City, Friday, June 12, 1936- Issued July 1936 as Decca 848 B.
Judy at 14, was listed as 13 on the original Decca 78rmp record.
Writen by pianist J. Russell Robinson, future film and television screenwriter Irving Taylor, and pianist Harry Brooks; another 'novelty' number referring to American slavery. "Mister Charlie," is the common reference to a white slave owner. Not a novelty subject at all. We'll look at this from a historical perspective, but most importantly to enjoy Judy. Backed by Bob Crosby and his Orchestra, recieving credit here-

Yank Lawson, Phil Hart, trumpets; Joe Harris, Warren Smith, trombones; Gil Rodin, Matty Matlock, clarinets/alto saxaphones; Eddie Miller, clarinet/ tenor saxaphone; Dean Kincaide, tenor saxaphone/arranger; Bob Zurke, piano; Nappy Lamare, guitar; Bob Haggart, string bass/arranger; Ray Bauduc, drums.

If requested, I'll post more, and chronologically.

  • her voice sounds the same as when she got older

  • I love this tune! Her phrasing was so there at 14! Thanks for uploading!

  • Stothart and Stoll of MGM music were better than most professional big bands. Only Bob Crosby was in their league. Superthartline

  • para mi desde luego es un latido en el corazon que convulciona mi cuerpo y mi mente........

  • I had not idea that "Mr. Charlie" meant a while slave owner. Must not have been too widespread.

  • Always loved this recording. From the start she was unparalleled.

  • Mr. Charlie was almost certainly a reference to Charlie Barnet, a famous swing bandleader rather than a reference to the white slaveowner.

  • That's just great stuff. JG and the boys!

  • lovely backing by the great late eddie miller and matty matlock. bobcatbing. kilmarnock. scotland.

  • Wonderful voice!
