Dat gebied werd in die tijd geteisterd door rampokkers en peloppers, bendes die plunderend rondtrokken en die niets met zoiets nobels als een vrijheidsstrijd te maken hadden. Ook de inlandse bevolking had erg te lijden onder die bendes, er werden door die plunderaars ook onschuldige mensen vermoord, ledematen en hoofden afgesneden etc. En hoe je het ook wendt of keert, Nederland was in die tijd verantwoordelijk voor de orde in dat gebied.
