My name is Curtis Konek. I am an Inuk from Arviat, Nunavut and I am also in the Canadian Rangers.

This video clip is for people who are going to experience the Arctic for the first time. This is a good way to show how Inuit survived and continue to survive in the Arctic for so many years. I want to share Inuit knowledge and survival skills, and show people that traditional Inuit clothing is very reliable and important to Inuit.

Special thanks to the Nunavut Research Institute, Nunavut Arctic College, and Jamie Bell!

  • Our nordic ancestors are very much alike in that we had to make due with long periods of harsh, sub-zero temperatures. Though the land was green and (mostly) fertile in spring and summer days, the winters were (are) still very tough. The advent of our bronze age about 3500 years ago helped the survival rate of northern communities tremendously. Though fur was mostly used for cloaks, our ancestors relied primarily on woven linen and wool for clothing. This is interesting insight. Great video!

  • Greetings.

As a Cherokee it is great to see Native Americans teaching the ways of our fathers and grandfathers. Your grandmother has great tallent with her clothing making skills.

My sister in law is from Barrow Alaska and is a Inuit.

  • I, think...its a good think to see inuuit on YT. I do hope they keep their traditions. Don't let the West take your history from you. I am from the UK (England) by the way.

  • This is very cool. I like finding out more about the traditional skills and ways of doing things, whether it's the proper clothing or anything like that. I'm also interested in learning more about the Canadian Rangers.

  • Thanks for the informative video! Can your grandmother make me some clothes? I believe Inuit knowledge.

  • Wonderful video my friend, your grandmother is very talented. Id love to have a set of your traditional clothing for the cold trips into the Rockie Mountains.

  • Thanks for the video. Best of luck in the near future and be safe.

  • Great video! So, where do the elders get the patterns for the clothing that they/ you wear? And from the clothing, you could get by with one caribou hide, yes? Maybe two?

    More videos please!
