A taste of rock garden kayaking near Sitka, AK filmed during "Exposed Coast Kayak Expedition Training" courses in Alaska w/ Kayak Academy. George and Barb Gronseth and our students have been among the first sea kayakers to explore these rocks, slot canyons, and islands. Local rock garden kayaking attractions include: "Entrance Exam" (off Cape Burunof - the S. entrance to Sitka's Eastern Channel), "The Fun-House Rocks" & "Jaws" (two side-by-side features - be careful with the "Jaws", they have eaten a few kayakers), "The Hallway" (short for "Hallway of Doom" as many have found), and the spectacular ocean paddling along the capes and cliffs on the outer coasts of the Rakof Islands and Biorka Island. Study the chart of this area, NOAA Chart No. 17326 or the Google map on our Website's page about the trip (the "SK 401" course), and you'll see endless possibilities for playing in rocks and camping in the islands. We've been lucky enough to explore these islands every year for over a decade, and yet each trip reveals some new, exciting terrain to paddle. Not every feature is working or safe to mess with on any given day, but no matter what the conditions, we can find something to thrill anyone any day. As a result of our experience and intimate knowledge of this area, we now know when it's too extreme over here that mean's it will be really fun over there. When you know the place like we do, the choices are infinite.
Each year Kayak Academy ships a load of performance sea kayaks from Seattle to Sitka for this 10 day trip. If you have the skills, you can fly in and join us. Sitka is serviced with daily jet flights from Seattle, WA (3 - 4 hours by air).

Kayak Academy's "Exposed Coast Kayak Expedition Training" trip is operated under special use permit with the Tongass National Forest
