In September 2009, 157 pro-democracy supporters were gunned down by the military regime in Guinea. Over a thousand were wounded and many women were raped and assaulted by soldiers on the streets of the capital city of Conakry. The issue has received serious attention from the international community. CIVICUS urges that the political solution to the crisis must take into account the need for justice for the victims.
