"Clairon" is originally the name of the old infantry bugle, which made a "clear" sound. The FAMAS shape looks vaguely like a trumpet or clairon. The ammo is the standard NATO 5.56 mm.
Such patrols by soldiers look weird in cities. They have been organized since the 1990s, in public places like trains stations or monuments, mainly as a measure to prevent terrorism, since France was a target for Algerian & Mid-eastern Islamists. That was long before the US declared the "war on terror"!
