A volunteer helps unload incaged dogs, which are rescued before being slain, in Beijing, April 16, 2011. Animal protection activists Friday stopped a truck on the way transporting 520 dogs to a slaughterhouse in Northeast China's Jilin province on the Beijing-Harbin Highway. LeepPet Holding Corp, a pet service company, and Shangshan Animal Charity Fund finally bought all the animals with 115,000 yuan ($17,606) from the dog trader early Saturday morning. Volunteers then transported the dogs to an animal care center of the China Small Animal Protection Association (CSAPA) in Beijing, providing them with food and medical treatment.

exactly animals are killed because we like the taste of meat. i just love the way everyone blames china.. its i within their culture tradition they eat cats and dogs. MOST chinese people nowadays DO NOT eat them, but there are still the minority that will.. its like the way in the west they hunt animals with guns just for fun. but you dont see propaganda painting western people as cruel to animals.. people only talk about the bad stuff that happens out of china.

  • Beijing doesn't deserve the Olympic Games!

  • I am thankful for the stoping to this ONE truck but how many millions more are there throughout the world full of chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, and so many other animals all for human consumption. NO animal should be killed for us to eat!

  • It's terrible what dogs and other animals go through in countries like China, and I am glad to see that there are people who care enough about them to do this. I'm not surprised to hear that animal shelters in China are badly corrupted though - I recently found out that they are also corrupted in many European countries, including Spain and Italy. The suffering that 'Man's Best Friend' is put through is truly horrendous worldwide.

  • I am so happy for these dogs, and so greatful to the animal activists! They have done a marvellous job, both in rescuing these dogs and in bringing awareness to the horror of the dog meat industry. Wonderful news!

  • this really is a big step towards animal rights in china

there r many who eats dogs there..many of the dogs were stolen from previous owners..they includes huskies german shepherds golden retriever...any dogs that u can name...

I personally have a husky and a border collie. Seeing this breaks my heart.

Although d dogs were sent to shelters, it is not guaranteed that they would get the attention they need throughout their life time since the animal shelters in China is so badly corrupted...
