Kathleen Ferrier sings Gustav Mahler's Kindertotenlieder
Nun seh' ich wohl, warum so dunkle Flammen
Ihr sprühtet mir in manchem Augenblicke.
O Augen!
Gewoben vom verblendenden Geschicke,

Now I see well why with such dark flames
your eyes sparkled so often.
O eyes!
It was as if in one full glance
you could concentrate your entire power.
Yet I did not realize - because mists floated about me,
woven by blinding fate -
that this beam of light was ready to be sent home
to that place whence all beams come.
You would have told me with your brilliance:
we would gladly have stayed near you!
But it is refused by Fate.
Just look at us, for soon we will be far!
What to you are only eyes in these days -
in future nights shall be stars to us.
DANKE!

Extemporal interpretation between K. Ferriers voice and Walter with the Vienna. It is the utmost touching musical moment without the pitfalls of being sentimental. A creation (not a re-creation) with breathing music feelings and a memorable dialogue between the orchestra and the contralto. Ferriers diction which permits to understand each word is incorporating musical accents towards voice coloration, musical notes and complete words and give a marvelous tension and dynamic to Mahler.

Ferrier's singing was always bracingly honest; her aim seems to have been to draw the listener at once into the composer's heart. I have never been distracted by the "craft" of her intrepretation, as I often am with Fischer-Dieskau or Schwarzkopf -- artists for whom I nevertheless have much respect and affection.

This song tears at your heart. Kathleen Ferrier was the ultimate singer and she was at her best in Mahler. Every song from Kindertotenlieder is eternal.
