"Atencion" Cuban numbers station - with data!

This seemed like an ordinary spy numbers broadcast from Cuba...

However, at 1.03 a chime is sounded followed by some sort of data transmission. I heard this earlier in the afternoon on Atencion's (V2A) sister morse code station, M8a, on 5800kHz.

This station, from what I've read, has had the same format for some 30 or so years. This would indicate that Cuba's intelligencia has only very recently added this feature.

The operatives that receive this signal may be carrying some new equipment in addition to just a shortwave radio, or it could serve to co-ordinate with other transmitters.

...and yes, that's a toy Mazda RX 8 sitting there :)

@MattExzy I just ordered a Tecsun PL-600 and I live in Tennessee, USA which is in the south and I hope i can hear it. Do you mind telling me or making a video showing your antenna setup? Today, even though i dont have the radio i made an electric fence wire longwire (no electricity of course) that is stretched from my window about 30 meters. does it need to be grounded or anything? on my end I have an insulated copper wire with strands and thats it. The other end is connected to a metal fence.

I recorded something similar, on 3/7/2011... I didn't know what it was until I found your video. Do you think it's the same thing though, yours sounds a bit different. Mine was at 0839 UTC when the tone started, which is usually about when they do the 'finalé' call to end the TX.
