I was born and raised in Coos Bay, Oregon. When I was a boy I used to see him often when he was doing his practice runs. It's really difficult to convey the aura that surrounded Coos Bay (Marshfield High,) and Eugene, home of the University of Oregon, at that time. He was a hero to us, and most Oregonians were devastated when he died. There was a huge service for him, with an open casket, at Pirate Stadium, but I was just so heartsick I couldn't bear to go—and I lived right across the street.

Somebody may beat me, but he's going to have to bleed to do it - Pre. Talk about a runner with such a sense of determination and spirit. Winning wasn't enough for him. Going out there and knowing he gave it all he had was what mattered. You don't see very many runners like him anymore.
