Quick test run of my 5.5hp fuel injected, turbocharged engine. This engine is controlled by my homebrew ECU, it's PC tunable, (spark advance, and fuel delivery tables).

Part List:
Homebrew ECU, RHB31 Turbocharger, MAP, TPS, Block and IAT Temp, TDC and CAM sensors, electronic spark coil, in-tank fuel pump, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, PC tunable.

  • I like your blog page. Do you have more photo's of how the thottle body is connected to the block. I'm guess you have an custom adapter for mounting? Do you know if there other option for the throttle body that would in place of the BMW r800?

  • Unfortunately no, those are all the pictures I have. I don't know of any throttle bodies that will bolt on, they all seem to need a adapter. I was looking at a throttle body from an Aprilia scooter... that one seems to be better suited for this size engine.

  • Very Cool project! What's you thought on using an arduino (atmega328) for the ecu? I'm interested in doing efi setup with a 6.5hp clone setup after seeing a fuel injection on a riding lawnmower.

  • Depending on what you want to do, the arduino board will work. Things get a bit complicated when you want to add more functions than you first thought, or want to do more of the calculations on the uC.

  • I was curious as to how you handled the oil feed and return. I'm building a kart soon and I'm using a 6.5hp Harbor Freight motor with an IHI VF20 turbo but I'm stumped on oil feed and return lines.

  • In this video, the oil is being pulled from the drain plug of the sump, through the turbo using a small scavenge pump.

  • Thanks! A while back a guy at a local kart shop offered to dyno it for me, but I never got around to doing it. Since then, I started working on another fuel injection setup and some of the parts have been re-used. I'll definitely dyno the next one.

  • This is fantastic. I've been thinking about this for years. To hear that thing boosting, and you know it's metering fuel properly and all that is really awesome. Most people just rubber band some crap onto some other crap, but you did it the way I would have. It's even compact, very nice. Have you given any thought to measuring the power output? Like a flywheel/sensor kinda thing?

  • Not sure, we shall see.

  • The electronics are probably similar only because there are a limited number of ways to hook up the sensors, but the coding for both the ECU and tuning software are definitely not. It would have been nice to find the Megasquirt code before I started coding, it would have made this project a lot easier :)
