The M1 Abrams is a third-generation main battle tank produced in the United States. It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and Commander of US military forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. The M1 is a well armed, heavily armored, and highly mobile tank designed for modern armored ground warfare. Notable features of the tank include the use of a powerful gas turbine engine, the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment for crew safety. With a weight of close to 68 short tons (almost 62 metric tons), it is one of the heaviest main battle tanks currently in service.

The M1 Abrams entered U.S. service in 1980, replacing the 105 mm gun, full tracked M60 Patton. It did, however, serve for over a decade alongside the improved M60A3, which had entered service in 1978. The M1 remains the principal main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and in 2010 Iraq. It is anticipated to continue in U.S. service until the 2050s, approximately 70 years after adoption.

Three main versions of the M1 Abrams have been deployed, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, incorporating improved armament, protection and electronics. These improvements, as well as periodic upgrades to older tanks have allowed this long-serving vehicle to remain in front-line service. The M1A3 is currently under development.

  • @MegaMadGun Well maybe not bounce, but explode on the outside, most of the time causing no damage. In almost every case they were hit in the CBRN kit, or the engine, which is much weaker. Still, they were never really "knocked out", and the crews survived, so I wouldnt say they were "lost", since they repaired the tanks to zero mile conditions afterwards. Now if the Iraqis had Javelins, then it would have been a different story...

  • FUCK THE LEAPORED,FUCK THE CHALENGER,FUCK THE LECRIC,FUCK THE T90,FUCK ALL OTHER FORGIEN TANKS-IM ABRAMS TO THE CORE AND I WILL ONLY EVERY TRUST MY LIFE TO AN ABRAMS IF I HAD TO GO TO WAR IN A TANK >:)

  • @Bodybuildinq Haha, and I play MW3. According to every 6 year old who has ever played COD, I know everything about the military,

  • and rpgs dont do shit to abrams. i know ive been hit by them in a abrams

  • if it just bonced of it wouldnt have hurt the hydrolics, that stuff is on the inside of the tank

  • it dosnt matter if the hydrolics are out they still have manual controls. they can still fight

  • @qelleri just 1 actually bounced off but severed hydrolic cable so tank couldnt turn it turret but crew survived

  • @Blueatchley12 I heard 4 or 5 were lost to enemy fire coming from t-72s

  • @qelleri ywah i know that and no abrams where lost only four where lost due to large 500pnd ieds or rpg attacks but yeah i know there monkey models

  • @Blueatchley12 Remember that those "tanks" the Abrams was fighting against were "monkey models" of old soviet tanks. This meaning that they had only pure steel armor and their ammunition was obsolete. Even the turrets were hand-cranked. It was like clubbing baby seals for the abrams to destroy them. And yet some abrams tanks were lost.
