"Lawler missed with that one." A bad looking spot made to seem legitimate and purposeful with one simple sentence from a great announcer. Instead of trying to cover it up, he interplayed it into the bout. THAT is why it was so easy to suspend disbelief back then because the announcers treated it like a legitimate sport and at no point did they give any indication that what you were watching was anything less than deadly serious. That's the way it should be today.

A Lawler DVD is well overdue. 4 disc set.

Lawler vs Mantell is one of the most violent series of matches in wrestling history. There's so many great punches in this match my head is going to explode with joy. They sound like cannons.

@CombatSportFan oh sorry my bad

@catinator2 Actually, Lawler has never held a single WWE championship. All of Lawler's titles were sanctioned by the National Wrestling Alliance, the American Wrestling Association and a variety of regional territories. His prominent titles were the AWA World Heavyweight championship, the World Class Heavyweight championship, and he made the NWA Southern Heavyweight championship famous and one of the most respected regional titles on Earth.

@yugiohwarduelist999 Barbed wire matches were famous across the Southeast, Midwest and some of the Southwestern promotions. In fact, they were developed, if I am not mistaken, in Texas probably during the 1950s or 1960s. They are much older than people realize.

@yugiohwarduelist999 did he not have it before? i heard he's held nearly every title in the wwe

i had no idea Jerry the King Lawler had a BARBED WIRE MATCH under his belt. he has my respect now... lol.
It's sad that wrestling fans today will NEVER get exposed to matches like this one. This one has only 1800 views but a stupid Miz/Cena match will have over a million and it won't even compare to the pacing, selling, storytelling, and commentary in this match.

@MrStonecold71 - I'll second that! :)

Even though 90% of this match is punches, it is so riveting. The selling these two are doing, the pacing, the fans reaction and Lance Russell trying to make it seem real, without insulting the viewer's intelligence makes this great.

The good things about being a SOUTHERN wrestling fan: 1) We don't have to have a tutorial on the history of barbwire, or hear how mutch damage it can do. 2) We can actually have a good wrestling match, that focuses on the wrestlers abilities, and not be obsessed by the strands between the ropes. As much as I like the ECW Funk vs. Sabu barbwire match, old matches like this make them seem theatrical. Just another normal Monday night at the MSC.

@lawlersarmy - And the barbed wire is actually functional in this match! The purpose was to keep Dutch in the ring for a decisive outcome. Makes sense. The wire wasn't necessarily a prop to draw blood, in my opinion, but more of a threat. The mind's image of what COULD happen was enough to keep the crowd on edge.
