"Shane", whoever his name was, trying to give up gunfighting, was on the run and wanted no trouble. There was a new law passed, that no one could shoot anybody except in self-defense. He could do physical work and try to settle down, but was not accepted by the homesteaders, despite his trying. When the ranchers, wanting to control all the land, hired a gunslinger - Wilson, out of Cheyenne - to kill the leader of the homesteaders, "Shane" knew that only he could match up on any 1-1.
