The trend toward ultra high-density farming to produce super-premium wines explained by vineyard manager extraordinaire, Ben Merz of Coastal Vineyard Care Associates.

From 500 vines per acre & 30 pounds per plant in early '80s to 2420 vines & a mere 2 pounds per plant of intensely flavored fruit in the new millenium. Santa Ynez in Santa Barbara county learned fast.
