Hitler's army thundered through Europe from 1939 to 1945 and brought needless death and destruction to the continent. What was it like to serve in this army? What was it like to conduct one of the bloodiest wars in history? What was it like to occupy half of Europe and yet to suffer total defeat?

This five-part portrait provides long-awaited answers to questions such as these and sheds light on the Wehrmacht's complex bonds of loyalty, conscience and honour. It is a thought-provoking story of an army's evolution from defense troops to military force to exterminating power.

  • easy for Schörner to be so tuff when he wasn't stuck in a miserable dead end waiting to die like his men.

  • Interesting. My grandad was in the city of Brünn in the former Czechoslovakia when it was encircled by the Russians. Schörner had two deserteurs hanged and left the city himself on a plane immediately afterwards.

  • @grannman Compared to Model Schorner was a murdering gung ho nazi officer. Model though ruthless in command and to the enemy always cared for the welfare of his men and at least had the courage to realize he had served a maniac and excepted the consequences. Schorner hung deserters before he deserted his command in Czechoslavakia and fled west to surrender. I have more respect for Model then Schorner

  • Where there is politics, there is allways insanity !

  • @ThugCologne The Tigers are good tanks but just like anything else they can be destroyed.

  • Very very very interesting documentary, thanks for sharing needlenoise!!! :)

  • I´d liked to shoot Schörner.

  • @ThugCologne SU-100 most likely. It was called by Russian troops the Fucking end to Everything because of it's ability to kill any German tank out there reliably at at standrad combat ranges.

  • @ThugCologne SU-100 most likely.

  • @ThugCologne Artillery or ground attack planes ?? Dunno,if the tracks get shot off they are in a tough spot..

Perhaps AA cannons ?? The Germans used their famous 88mm AA gun with great succes, the Russians had something like that too...:)

  • Schorner was an ass-------his motto was "strength through fear" ..He wanted his troops to fear him more then they feared the enemy....So no matter what mission they had to do,they do it..
