"Sole Perspective"
America's First Shoe Design Reality Show

Cristina's Bio
Hello! My name is Cristina Osorio, age 22, and I am a Senior of Fashion Design at Woodbury University in Burbank, California. I enjoy dancing, drawing, horse back riding, traveling, and spending time at the beach. I am originally from Las Vegas, Nevada and have lived there for the past 10 years. My parents, Helen and Ismael Osorio, own a tuxedo and bridal gown rental store called Jennaleigh's Bridal and Formalwear. My father is from Colombia and my mother is French-Canadian. My older brother Alexander lives in Houston, Texas and my little brother, Peter, goes to high school in Vegas. I currently live with my grandmother and my black cat, The Darkness, whom I call Miss Kitty for short. Having been born in LA, I have spent much of my childhood in Glendale. After moving to Las Vegas 10 years ago, I went to a catholic grammar school and a catholic high school, Bishop Gorman. During high school I spent about three years learning Japanese. I was also in ballet and tap for around 14 years. When I was younger, I would design my clothes, and, with my mother's help, I became knowledgeable about sewing and construction. I made my first gown during my senior year of high school and I was able to wear it to prom. I have been in art classes since the first grade and, as a result, I have learned to draw and paint using almost every kind of media. I have been able to further develop and hone my skills at Woodbury University. After traveling Europe with my father, I have gained considerable inspiration from European culture. However, most of my inspiration comes from my interests in Southeast Asia. In particular, I am fascinated with Japanese culture and fashion. I hope to one day open a boutique in Kyoto as well as many other cities world wide. When I became aware of Sole Perspective, I saw it as an incredible opportunity to show the public my designs and skills. I just want to be able to put myself out there and hope that people find an interest in what I do. The first challenge, in which we had to design 4 different shoes, was very enjoyable. I love to sketch, and rendering fabrics is what I am best at. I wanted to render two things I had yet to, which was wood grain and snake skin. The second challenge was to design three sandals based off of Bernard Rudofsky's original designs and concepts using the 'Miami' sole. I wanted to create something that would reach their customers with a new and edgy appeal. As I researched Rudofsky, I found that his ideas about footwear and architecture are similar to my own. Bernard believed that a building is a building, made of steal and cement, while nature is made of organic living matter. A building should never be made to look like something of nature and vise versa. During his travels in Japan, Rudofksy came to realize that a simple and minimal way of life is most efficient and healthy. He then transferred all this into his footwear, which he believed, should embrace the foot and free it at the same time. I tried to incorporate this into my designs by allowing the foot room to grow and move while embracing it with artistically crossing straps. I decided to use metallic leathers since metallic materials are in fashion for spring/summer '09. I wanted to keep my designs fresh and young with a sense of maturity. I hope to be able to use Bernard's innovations to further continue his timeless visions. I am going to win Sole Perspective because I have the dedication and the desire to put forth all my efforts into creating pieces that are beautiful, strong, and represent me as a designer.
