I run through the 1993 Mazda RX-7 transmission as it hooks up to the engine block.

My pilot bearing broke and seized the two together. Its diagnosis feels like the clutch is broken.

Some profanity. Understand this was a living hell to fix with limited knowledge of clutch mechanics. I share this with you to hopefully reduce your need of profanity while wrenching.

  • Now, is there a decent way to remove the pilot bearing without using mazda's "special" tool?

  • @daonhathaifc3s two of my pilot bearings seized to my flywheel and made the situation no holds barred. i used a pilot bearing puller which i could rent at autozone. worked well. scored the inside a little, but that was the least of my concern at the time.

  • Did you have any warning sounds? My fd's pilot bearing has been making this noise like "wuh vuv vuv VUV VUV VUV" And Im wondering if its an early sign of this. Im electricit on the club forums, if you want to pm me. Thanks

  • @m3rcup mine started making a similiar noise, but its hard to differentiate between the pilot bearing and a worn throw out bearing. a throw out bearing will make a dirty/rough ball bearing sound, whereas my pilot bearing made a sound similiar to how you wrote it.

  • That thing you were pressing with your finger, is that the infamous clutch fork thats prone to BREAK on FD's??? If so, it scares me cause that thing looks weak and i think mine is original lol :(

  • lol ive never had a problem with that one, i hate the pilot bearing obviously. I also had the clutch fluid line break and rocket me out into traffic. This part seems pretty sturdy... seems

  • When all else fails... get yourself an adapter plate, and bolt up a T-56... stronger tranny, 6 speed, in an FD... phenominal.

  • my mom always wants me to take my car to a mechanic to ,im not paying some guy to do somthing i can do my self . and i hope thats a junk roter . that tranny will probably screw it up

  • its called a pilot bearing or support bearing...get it? its for support, keeps the shaft straight
