ENGLISH: Certain substances (vasodilators; e.g. acetylcholine & prostaglandins) are released to blood in order to regulate the diameter of blood vessels. They interact with specific receptors on endothelial cells, increasing calcium concentration and eliciting synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) gas. NO travels to the following cell layer (smooth muscle cells), stimulating the synthesis of cyclic GMP. Cyclic GMP initiates a cascade of events that eventually results on muscle relaxation and vasodilation.
