'for ( i= ' was a commissioned residency at Camerawork Gallery. Initially the work contained no images or sounds, it was constructed and conceived as a framework for interaction, an orchestration for collaboration and representation within a computer mediated environment. Workshops enabled diverse groups of participants, ranging from school children to architects, to input images, sounds and interactive structures into the installation. During the residency the works could be activated by movement in the exhibition space by day, by night they were projected onto the glass frontage of the gallery, forming a reactive focal plane for passers-by. The animations created by the workshop participants were placed into an interactive structure which encoded compositional rules and a 'perspectival inversion' to allow the video detection of movement to project a three dimensional sound space. The first performance '1001' took place in this dynamic improvisational structure.
