One way of achieving a typewriter effect in After Effects. Will work in previous versions of AE. In Part 1 we place the text on the paper and apply the typewriter animation preset, before using the wiggler to get some more realistic typing motion. Then we add a typebar (the metal arm that types the text).

This tutorial is a response to a thread on the After Effects forum at creativecow.net. See the original thread here: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/927624#927624

  • ive got after effects cs5 and i am using the typewriter effects on a long paragraph. how do you edit the amount of time that it takes to type in?

  • @PieMan424242 You can move the keyframes closer together. Select the layer that has the typewriter effect on it and hit UU to see them.

  • excuse me, where can i get typewriter filter, i don't have it..

  • @BaneLucio It's a text effect. Type 'typewriter' in the effects panel.

  • Hey, i need some help here... I have the typewriter effect on Adobe bridge, but I cant open it with AE... its says unsupported file type... any idea how to solve this? Thanks!

  • Well, you don't want to OPEN the effect, the effect file should just be placed in the plugins folder of AE. It should then appear in your effects menu.

  • Hi, thanks so much for the tutorial, wondering if you could answer this question? When I apply the wiggler effect, it actually makes it backspace a little sometimes. Is there some parameter I can change to prevent that? I'm using CS5.

  • I like your accent.

  • thanks!
