The engine--the Vedeneyev M14P supercharged radial--can make the plane virtually hover. It uses a unique iris-type cowl flap arrangement and also uses compressed air to start the engine. Between flights, an engine-driven pump recharges the on-board air tank; if needed, auxiliary air can be attached to start the plane. Also, the Sukhoi pilot sits at a highly-reclined angle with a tall joystick.
