These Czechoslovakian Nut Rolls are a Christmas tradition in our family. Both my Grandmas made them, my mom showed me and this year my daughter learned. Posting to keep the details alive! Recipe; *6 c flour *1 T. salt *2 cups crisco *2 pkgs yeast *2 cups cold milk *6 egg yolks Mix flour, salt & shortening in large bowl. Dissolve yeast in cold milk. Add egg yolks to milk mixture beating eggs slightly. Add milk mixture to flour mixture. Knead lightly on floured bread board until a ball forms, do not handle too much. Place, covered in crisco greased bowl overnight (or 4+ hrs) TO PREPARE; Sprinkle board with flour and granulated sugar. Have a covered rolling pin. Take teaspoon of dough, slightly flatten in hand and roll out into flour/sugared board. Fill with about 1/2 teaspoon filling and roll up like half moons/crescents. BAKE 375 degrees for 15-20 mins. Cool on cake cooler and store covered between wax paper. The filling is traditionally walnut, poppy or apricot. All can be purchased but the walnut recipe is: *4 cups finely chopped walnuts (3 lbs)* 1/4 c. hot water *3/4 cup granulated sugar *1 egg white, beaten till stiff *1/4 teaspoon cinnamon *1 t. vanilla *1 grated rind of lemon. Enjoy! (Sometimes called a Slovak recipe)
