The first section of the video is walking without the electrical stimulator. The second half shows the difference when the stimulator is used.

Further notes....

Functional Electrical Stimulation is a device worn to aide walking + foot drop issues for people with neurological deficits. It is a pocket size medical device that applies small pulses of electrical stimulation to the nerves of the affected muscle, causing the muscle to contract and the foot to lift.

The stimulation is applied to the outside of the leg using self adhesive patches called electrodes. The muscle contraction is timed to walking using a small switch placed inside the shoe. This technique is known as Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES).

Some walking ability is needed before the device can be used. Typically the minimum requirements are to be able to standup from sitting unaided and be able to walk a minimum of ten metres using appropriate aides such as a walking stick or frame. Neither the devices or the treatments are suitable for all patients and it is critical that patients attend an initial assessment in order to assess both their suitability and the outcomes that can be expected for their individual circumstances.

  • Thanks for showing your walking. I also have an FES walking aid (dual stimulator). I know that without it i would be totally wheelchair bound by now, it seems to have halsted the progression of the disability. Please see my videos, but I have only featured one stimulator here. All the best.

  • Ha ha!
