@illeststyles They're two different exercises. Crunches are better for isolating your abs specifically. Situps will hit your abs a bit differently and they're useful in their own way.
I let my back touch the "padding", it keeps the abs from being targeted mostly isometrically and you are sure that you get through the whole range of motion this way too

Thats a sit up when your back touches the pad, if you dont touch the pad and dont go all the way up thats called a crunch :)
