To all those confused. The song is about the son of a Ukrainian exile living in Macedonia when it was part of Yugoslavia. The son (who supports Shaktar) comes to Britain in the back of a lorry and disappears. The End

@vbbskmk (continue from last reply) two meanings: one is a nickname of residents of Makeevka in Ukraine, and another one is Macedonian like resident of Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. so, it does make sense, and no, I think that Joe did not make mistake in his lyrics. Macedonian is just ambiguous word in this song. just to mention, this is only my personal opinion.

so, here's the lyrics:
"One of the Ukraine exiles of Yugoslavia"
i think joe mentions here ukraine people who left former USSR and went to Yugoslavia in hope of better life. So, when they came to Yugoslavia, they realized that there is war to come, and then they escape from Yugoslavia (what was not to hard to do, cause Yugoslavia had opened borders, which USSR did not had) to UK. i think this is the reason why is Macedonian mention, it has two meanings: (to be continued in next reply)

@mvtmdn I know about the town of Makeevka, but i didn't know that it's nicknamed "Macedonia", thanks for that info. But the song still makes no sence! If he's singing about an Ukrainian from Makeevka, why he mentions "exiles from YUGOSLAVIA". Find the lyrics and you'll see. Macedonia was formerly a constituent coutry of Yugoslavia, so how is this related to Makeevka or Ukraine? I think Strummer confused everything up unintentionaly. That doesn't make him a bad songwriter, but people make mistakes
Cool! Viva la Shakhtar Donetsk football team!

Ukrainians don't just live in Ukraine, much of the eastern European nations were spread out across the Balklans, so yes not really bullshit after all.
