Hey, quick question - what's the difference between inverting phase while editing to make it coherent, versus positioning the mics to ensure the phase is coherent while tracking? And is it always easy to tell while tracking if it's out of phase?

@SplinterCell37 Inverting phase is done if two mics are 180 degrees out of phase with one another. For example, the top and bottom mics on a snare are 180 degrees out of phase and would suffer from cancellation if one weren't flipped. Check out our blog for great articles on topics just like this.

@SplinterCell37 Positioning the mikes for phase coherency saves a fair amount of time in the mixing booth. I would recommend using a pair of headphones to listen to how the take sounds in relation to the mikes' placement. Also, it's usually easiest to tell when the phase of the microphones needs adjusted by doing just that -- adjusting their phase. If you hear an improvement, go with what sounds best, because that's how recording music works! Hope that helps.
