An excursion into the Korowai Forest, South-West New Guinea

In 2001 we rode a motorized canoe upriver one of the many large rivers that from the high mountains of central West Papua flow through the southern lowlands and run toward the Arafura Sea.
We reached deep into the Korowai Forest and got up a tree house, the traditional Korowai dwelling.

I do kind of wonder why they haven't thought of constructing a ladder though,I mean they must know how to make them,I guess health & safety just isn't their thing huh :) maybe they just love watching tourists have accidents as their only source of amusement. Schadenfreude :P

@DarkLord0fHell The monopole ladder they use is perfectly safe for them; they climb it with total confidence even when loaded with children or provisions. Of course to some non trained (or agile) it can be dangerous (they told us of a German tourist who fell to his death a couple of years before we were there). I would not blame them for accidents however. After all it is up to the un-invited visitor to exercise the outmost prudence knowing one's limits.

@GHETTOMAXBOY To some extent I accept the shame even if your "do not disturb, keep the purity" if pushed to extremes would mean millions of isolated little worlds. You are also a hypocrite because while on one hand you chastise my video as interference with the Korowai "purity", on the other you make "The last cannibal...." a favourite of yours.

@brunvit Thank you for your reply and as you stated this comes naturally to them we all know and have seen these guys climb trees,I think it was the amazon tribes which were often employed to build quite a few of the skyscrapers in places like new york because they are fearless of height etc.but i still find it odd that they would use these in place of a ladder i mean they did pretty okay at building that roof i noticed why not make life even better and construct a nice ladder that's all :D
