http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/greygardens The 1975 Maysles brothers cult classic Grey Gardens told the story of the eccentric and often humorous mother-daughter relationship between Edith Beale and her daughter Edie—aunt and cousin to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. GREY GARDENS: From East Hampton to Broadway looks at how their lives set the stage for the Maysles film and later the Broadway musical, both of which have impacted the art, entertainment and fashion communities.

In this clip, the filmmakers and composer talk about how they weren't sure how they'd turn the Grey Gardens documentary into a musical, but they knew it could be done.

GREY GARDENS: From East Hampton to Broadway premieres Tuesday, December 23 on INDEPENDENT LENS, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Terrence Howard, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, INDEPENDENT LENS is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide.

  • @OMGDave16 Have you seen the original documentaries? If not go to Hulu.com and watch "Grey Gardens" and "The Beales of Grey Gardens'" they're both free to watch. They're the real thing not a movie....much,much better that the movie of course.

I fell in love with both of them immediately . Better yet go to Facebook and join the "Grey Gardens"group. Jerry "The Marble Faun" is a member and is sooo very nice. Good luck.

  • I really wish I got to see the show before it closed in 2007. I fell in love with it the moment I heared the soundtrack which was only a few months ago. I feel that this Broadway musical diserved every bit of attention it got during it's year run on the stage. Only a cast such as this can truly breathe life back into one of America's gretaest stories ever told and keep it alive. :)

  • Little Edie actually lived until she was 84, it was her mother who died at 81.

  • David died in 1987 at 54, Al is still alive, but you've been too quick to judge & are completely wrong about their intentions. They adored these women who were each paid $5000 up front.

Perhaps you should get your facts straight before making wild & disgustingly anti-semetic accusations which are a disgrace & should not have even been dignified with a response. The Maysles had no idea whether it would make any money at all, documentaries are not like 'movies' they are always an expensive gamble

  • The musical came 4 years after her death, but I think you've missed the point of it.

However, Little Edie did perform in her own cabaret show in New York City's Reno Sweeney club from January 10th-14th 1978, she sang a few numbers and held a Q's and A's section afterwards which was the highlight of the evening...but probably had the Onassis' lawyers on valium and telephones, and may have contributed to the premature closure of the show.

The reviews were bad but the audiences were delighted.

  • crack eyes jajajaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
