This 106 year old historic home on Mapleton Hill in downtown Boulder is getting an addition of a basement. The existing foundation was failing, it consisted of a 2' x 2' rock and mortar foundation wall that rested on dirt. Over the years it settled and something had to be done. Due to the Boulder Landmarks requirements the building has to remain intact. The only way to preserve the building was to excavate under it and temporarily support it with steel in order to put shotcrete basement walls in to permanently support the structure. The existing 2 x 2 foundation wall is encased in steel channel on either side with grout filling in the holes. This is then supported by I beam columns that stand on helical piers that are approximately 17 deep. The contactor on this project is Buckner Design Build, bucknerdesignbuild.com.
