@rubinco you wreak of youth my friend. Think about what your saying. Gaylord was the FIRST and ONLY gymnast to perform that "move" at the time. He had nobody to copy or learn from. He created the "move". Gymnasts today have had 25 years to practice that move and expand on it. Every sport evolves. If you can't make the Olympic team in this day and age then you wouldn't have made the team if you grew up back then. Respect the pioneers...

back in the day when chinese dudes weren't as sick as now

The terminology is so weird in this... it's a move, not a routine. or a skill, still not a routine. As for the gaylord II, it might have been ridiculous when he made it, but there are WAY more difficult releases now-a-days...
oh the good ol' days. Where I could have gone to the olympics (I'm 16)...

@DruggedPocky LOL!!!!!! Me and my buddy were just saying the same thing. "Man, why would his parents name him that?!?" If my Dad passed on Gaylord to me I probably would have changed it. Then again, he did become a pretty good Gymnastic.

People can't seem to get their facts straight about Olympic gymnastics competitions and home crowd advantage.
I have seen the 1980, 1984 and 1996 competitions and must say that the competitions in the USA in 84 and 96 were replete with overscoring for the home team. The Soviet gymnasts in Moscow were scored very stringently. The amazing Alexander Dityatin received very few 10s. The US team from 1984 benefitted from generous scoring and the Chinese competing in the first compulsory session.

Amazing! It's interesting to see how like in tennis, muscles are bigger on our athletes now. More speed, strength, and reaction time are necessary for sports that are increasingly becoming more about power serves and triple bajillion spins.
