On 29th May 1951 at Easington Colliery occured the last major mining disaster in Great Britain when 81 miners plus 2 men of the rescue brigade lost their lives. On the 60th Anniversary of that sad day we paid tribute to those men with a march behind the colliery band and the Miner's Lodge Banner from the site of the colliery via a service in the church to the mass grave in the graveyard. Here the procession leave the church and heads up the hill to the mass grave, where The Miner's Hymn "Gresford" - written to commemorate another coal-mining disaster at Gresford Colliery in North Wales where in September 1934 over 260 died in a massive underground explosion & fire.
