Monarch Butterfly Emerging

Female monarch eclosing/emerging. The lighting isn't the best, but you can still see what's happening. We had just saw another butterfly emerge 30 minutes earlier, which is why the kids aren't glued to the tank this time around. But I missed filming the first one, so got this one instead.

Notice the large abdomen hanging down. She will pump the fluid into her wings within minutes after emerging, slimming her abdomen down to the normal size.
