French Catholics Rally Against President: Protestors Upset by Francois Hollande's Initiatives

More than 500 Catholics have held a rally to protest campaign promises by newly elected French President Francois Hollande outside the Saint Augustine Church in Paris. The protest coincided with the annual celebration of French saint Joan of Arc. Demonstrators said promises concerning gay marriage, abortion, and the right of foreigners to vote threaten France's national identity as a Catholic nation. The protest was organized by the CIVITAS Institute, a group based in France and Belgium with the purpose of preserving the Christian influence in the countries. Holding the protest on the day of celebration for Joan of Arc seems to be no coincidence. The 15th century saint has remained a powerful symbol of French nationalism throughout history.
