This part of the station should be left alone. It is a piece of history.

You can blame Mayor LaGuardia too - he was very anti-trolley well before WWII. When Brooklyn and Queens Transit Company recieved their first 100 PCC cars in 1936, they wanted to order 400 more. LaGuardia told that if the 400 PCC's were ordered, he would revoke their franchise. Same for Third Avenue Railways - that's why TARS never ordered PCC's.

Kings County, NYC--the REAL home of the Trolley Dodgers, baby! What the fuck is a Trolley Dodger out in L.A.?...
Keeping it real, that abandon trolley terminal at Essex/Delancey has always been kinda scary to me when looking at it from the platform while waiting for the J. Even to this very day--I'm 30 now in 2012! Lol... But I do like some of the suggestions on what should become of it. Especially a night club, strip joint (imagine that! :D) and an actual Subway restaurant. That'd be official!
