My comment:
It is difficult to estimate the exact amount of gas in Ukrainian gas storages. It is easy to estimate it approximately.
Plants are main gas consumers. Half of the plants (in fact, more than half) in the country is cut off from gas supply. Usual consumption of Ukraine is ~250 mln. cubic meters a day. With half of working plants it is hence 125 mln. With it's own gas recovery amount of 50 mln, Ukraine needs 75 mln m^3 of external gas a day.
If Tymoshenko says they have 17 bln. m^3, Ukraine has enough gas to live with no worry until September 2009.
Now, three facts.
1. They already started to reduce gas pressure in the heat stations (I remind you that it's winter time now, whereas they say they have gas until autumn)
2. They demand for additional gas from Russia to provide non-zero gas pressure in the export pipeline system. Yushchenko asks for (attention!) 300 mln. cubic meters, which is nothing as compared to 17 bln. This means they don't have even this amount.
3. Russians suggest them, as a possible urgent scheme for Blkan states, to send gas from Ukrainian western storages to Europe now, provided that Russia sends the same gas amount to Ukrainian eastern storages - one to one swap. They refuse to do even this trivial operation. This means they don't have anything at all in the storages.
Conclusion: the approximate amount of gas in the Ukrainian gas storages is zero.
Which is a little bit less than those 17 bln m^3 declared by the Ukrainian government.
Ukraine has 50 mln of population, their own gas recovery is 60 mln m^3 a day. That is 1 cubic meter per person. Enough to heat dwelling houses.
However, if they'd like to provide industry with gas, they'd need several times more - depending on price.
At the world level of prices, most of their industry becomes void, then the total consumption will drop down significantly. If Russians will decide to continue sponsoring them, they will request previous amount of 250 mln m^3 a day.

mkh..
I understand, that EU pays gas based on oil prices 9 month earlier.
Oil price was $145.-
Today it's $40.-
What will gas price be in EU based on todays oil prices?

Make 9-months average yourself.
