This is Onaje's take on a song seared into the American public's mind as "The Theme From the 'Andy Griffith Show.'" I first heard this driving to work a couple of years ago, and it completely blew me away. Onaje is a highly respected pianist/composer/arranger in the music industry, and this clip will show you why. Today, many "jazz" musicians simply recreate their own versions of classic material. Rather than making the song their own, they stick with a song's original arrangement and play the melody on their own particular instrument. It takes talent but NOT imagination. Well, as you can see and hear, Onaje has plenty of talent and plenty of IMAGINATION and makes this song uniquely his own. The master's of ol' skool have to keep showing us new schoolers how it's REALLY done. Class is in session!
Exceptional!!!

This cat has always been a step ahead. I remember when he worked with Phyllis Hyman in the beginning of her career--a true maestro.
