Takeoff from Anderson, IN and flying over Middletown and Dayton, OH before landing at Red Stewart Airfield in Waynesville, OH. Being a grass strip, we light the runway with 18 oil lanterns at Stewart. Although the moon was so bright during this flight that we probably didn't even need them.

It gets a little blurry at times from the engine vibration but for the most part it's clear.

  • Sdillulio am impressed kerosane lamps is a practical solution my home airstrip is also grass rwy so this is of interest indeed, one question after your PPL do you still need to have the instrctor inboard

  • @CaptBesweri At my home airport? Yes, you do - but that's their policy, not an official FAA policy per se. I am licensed to fly and land at night... but I'd have to fly somewhere with permanent runway lighting.

  • Sdillulio was asking about the runway lighting the brief mentioned that it used lantens for lighting this is what I found interesting

  • @CaptBesweri Ahh, yes at the home field (Stewart) the runway is grass and there are no permanent lights installed. So during flight training, when night flights are required, they light the runway using kerosene lanterns. You're only allowed to land there at night with an instructor on board.

  • Sdilullo one query are flights at night allowed to such airstrips given the lighting conditions I find it rather interesting

  • @CaptBesweri Absolutely! In the US, you may fly at night in VFR (visual, i.e. not in the clouds, 5+ miles visibility) conditions as a Private Pilot. This flight was during my training toward my Private certificate with a Flight Instructor on board back in 2008. The airport is lit (blue lights are taxiways, white lights are runways) as you can see in the video.

  • Gorgeous! I'm watching them all again. -Gary

  • @CaptBesweri Nope, it's purely visual with natural vision. However, I have to note that the camera is seriously limited at capturing video in the dark when compared to the human eye. It was much easier to see in person!

  • did you have night vision, i can hardly make out the rwy threshold , center line or the edges, did not know that night landings were allowed in such lighting conditions

  • Thanks and yeah it's a royal pain to find when you've never done it before... but, surprisingly, once you know where to look the lanterns are far more visible than I would have ever expected.
