its not so hard to use the edger on a nice pinewood floor like that but if u tried on a 100 year old black japan paint covered floor.... u wouldnt get the same results. Good Video!!

@CONOBJ Thanks!

@lexichronicle2 when I said the leading edge, I meant anything decreasing from full disc width. this would be half the disc in contact with the floor, I used it to explain that the whole disc is not in contact with the floor, the full 360 degrees.it is basic tutorial. not intended for someone with your understanding of floor sanding. raising the castor carrier and widening the cut as you progress, that comes with experience. all the best

you can edge where ever you want to its just how good you are that counts
-
@CONOBJ disagree with that. at first, it's only the edges of the disc in contact. by the time you finish, you should be using the entire disc and very light passes, or the edges haven't been levelled.
-
@jeff2385 also, there's no point switch to a random orbit until the edges are level with the rest of the room. level means the cut lines left by the edges are filling the same area as the disc does.

@jeff2385 I've finished an entire herringbone floor with an edger and some 120 grit papers. It took about 2-3 hours per pass, and I did around 4 as I worked up from the coarse grit left by the leveling with the drum sander.
Drum sanders don't leave a nice finished on anything other than floorboards.
It CAN be done, but takes a lot of care.
Also, the backache is RIDICULOUS if you do an entire floor a few times over with an edger - cement mixing with a spade bad.
No visible swirl tho.

@jeff2385 CONO is right that a random orbit will blend the lines better. BUT, if you're CAREFUL, you can get rid of the lines with just the drum and edger.
You have to watch the lines closely as you work. If you're using the same grit on both the drum and edger, 80+ to finish, it's doable! You have to watch the lines.
As you work with the edger, watch for when the pattern / smoothness spreads to the diameter of the disc, then blend back a little into the drum region
Does it matter that you go from right to left instead of left to right?

@spdskte it makes little difference, if you go with the momentum of the disc its easier, if you go against the disc it is more aggressive, but harder work. Go with the momentum of the disc when finishing

I have just finished sanding the edges, however it is very evident where I sanded the edges. How do i blend the main floor colour with the edgees now? Please help!

@jeff2385 you need to go over the area where you used the edger with a random orbital sander and use the same finishing grit paper as you did for the rest of the room. you need to use the random orbital EVERYWHERE you used the edger. this will get rid of that shadow around the room. take your time and you will get the results you want all the best
