Ruth Fassenbaum, an activist member of the American Psychological Association, speaks out against torture by the Bush-Cheney regime and John Yoos role in providing legal cover for the US use of torture on prisoners. On August 17, 2009 Fassenbaum relates the parallel story of psychologists being paid to monitor the torture sessions in Guantanamo, Cuba. Ruth tells the crowd of about 100 about the struggle to change the policy of the APA and how it was won. She is calling for a similar victory in the case of those who are guilty of the crime of torture. According to the International Red Cross, children were tortured and over 100 prisoners died in the torture sessions carried out by the United States government under the orders and guidelines proscribed by G W Bush, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, John Yoo, and others. In most cases, the prisoners were never even charged with a crime. Many were caught up in sweeps in Afghanistan after the US dropped flyers offering about $5,000 for turning in Al Qaeda and Taliban people. Torture was used primarily to get prisoners to make false testimony that could then be used to justify wars, but would never be admissible in a court of law.
