Every year until 2010, Bukit Jalil estate residents had been celebrating the significant Tamil festival, Ponggal, with their families at home. However, this year they were forced to carry out the Ponggal ceremonies, outside their homes, at the Bukit Jalil estate entrance. This was because City Hall had issued a notice that on 15th January 2011 they would demolish the Bukit Jalil Estate which would have included the residents' homes, temple, Tamil school and cemetery. The notice and the presence of the 30 men accompanying Mr. Raja the previous evening had made the residents fearful of carrying out the Ponggal ceremonies within their homes.Video by
