The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-23; NATO reporting name: "Flogger") is a swing-wing fighter aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich bureau in the Soviet Union and is considered to belong to the "Third Generation" aircraft category along with similar-aged Russian-produced fighters like the MiG-25 "Foxbat". It was the first Soviet fighter with a look-down/shoot-down radar and beyond visual range missiles, and the first MiG production fighter plane to have intakes at the sides of the fuselage. Production started in 1970 and reached large numbers with over 5,000 aircraft built. Today the MiG-23 remains in limited service with various export customers.

  • its really fucking stupid to say that Russian hardware was not up to par with western, in the Gulf... thats like saying oranges beat apples! wtf?

the entier iraqi military (Air Force, Ground Force, ect.) was trained worse than an Ethiopian bush hunter! ...infact, Iraqi forces were so poorly trained that many Iraqi forces in the air simply defected to Iran during because they had no idea what to do! i mean hoesntly.. if Russian forces faced NATO in a similar situation NATO would get smashed!

  • @bittemeinrammstein You simply underestimated the Iraqi forces. The airforce pilots are well trained and have combat experience during Iran/Iraq war. The Mig-25 also shot down an F-18 in dessert storm. NATO also has it's loses during the air campaign. Iraqi forces was simply overwhelmed with NATO superior advance technology. When it comes to just pilots Iraqis are well trained. It took the F-15 top gun 4 missiles to finally hit a Mig-25 piloted by Iraqis.

  • the guy at 1:18 looks like borat lol

  • Which Documentary did you get this from? It looks cool enough for me to go out and shop for it at some point!

  • This video you posted must of come from a documentary. If it is do you know the name of the title?

  • It wasn't much of a dog-fighter but a high-speed interceptor. Swing-wing made it great at short take-off and landing but it flies like a brick. The swing control is manual so it is useless in a dog-fight unlike the auto F-14. With the swing-wing it can't carry shit for rocket-pods and bombs. It is a crappy bomber.

  • @stalkingalizee

The Soviets built several ground attack variants. There is a dedicated ground attack aircraft made from the MiG-23 airframe, the MiG-27. Furthermore, most dogfights do not occur at speeds of Mach 2 or higher. The MiG-23 ML is a lighter version of the standard MiG-23 with an improved G-rating (8.5 to 8) which can maneuver well in a dogfight.

  • Why would you stick rocket pods on a Mach 2 interceptor? Soviets were stupid.

  • The Mig-23 indeed had serious issues with poor manouverability, and overcomplicated non-intuitive control. It stood little chance 1vs1 against a Falcon or Eagle etc. The strenght of this model lied wih multi role abilities, diverse and heavy weapon load, and sheer numbers (many were built).

In a way it was designed based on the same (false) idea as the US F-4 namely that time of close aircombat / dogflight was over with the appearance of advanced AA missiles.

  • Haha good old Wing Commander Victor Otchuk. Good to see him back after almost 20 years :)
