Here is a short how-to on how to make a finished 9" patriotic friendship star block. We will use this block to make a top. But the beauty of this block is the amount of white. It is here that you can write a message for the future recipient of the wartime Quilt of Valor
I always cut my squares for half-square triangles 7/8 " larger than the finished square (2 HST's). This is a great method for making bias squares though. You never have to deal with those troublesome bias edges! The block lies flat every time.
You must be a more accurate cutter than I am, I guess, if you can get away with only adding 1/2" to the size of the squares for bias squares/2 HST's.
