San Diego's Wreck Alley has some of the best wreck diving available to recreational divers in Southern California. The Ruby E is a Coast Guard cutter with a colorful history that lies upright in 90 feet of water a short distance from the shore in Mission Bay.
This wreck was originally built in 1934 to be an interceptor of "rum runners" during the years of prohibition. It was never used for this task however because it was not completed until after prohibition ended. Eventually after being decommissioned by the Coast Guard it was converted to a fishing vessel or so it seemed. Customs officials impounded the Ruby E when it was discovered that it was being used to smuggle drugs.
Eventually the Ruby was purchased and was going to be sold as scrap when divers convinced the new owners to donate the wreck to divers in wreck alley. It was scrubbed clean and made safe for divers and was sunk in 1989 as a diver attraction.
This wreck is one of my favorites. So go get trained and head down to do some amazing wreck dives in wreck alley
