Our grandmother passed away on September 8th, 2002. September 8th already had special meaning to our family as it is the birthday of grandma's fourth grandchild Susan who would have been 40 years old on that day had she not passed away tragically at the age of 20. Perhaps it was grandma's 40th birthday "gift" to Susan as she passed early in the morning and they had a lot of catching up to do. Grandma was born in Arkansas and grew up with her two brothers there before the Great Depression hit and the exodus out west to California began. She eventually moved out west as well but not before she married the love of her life Charlie Adams and had two daughters Janis and Betty. She had seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter when she passed away and today she has even more great-grandchildren to carry on her family legacy. Grandma loved music and this song "I'll Fly Away" was one of her favorites. When we were kids she would sing this song and many other hymns from her hymnal with us when we would visit. Her parents, brothers and entire family were always very musical and her grandchildren, from every generation, continue to carry on that legacy.

Grandma was always up for an adventure and full of life. Often times she and her faithful companion Buffy would hop in the car on a whim and drive up to a music festival or to Porterville to visit her brothers and sister-in-law. On New Years Eve she was always wherever her brother Chet was "makin music" dressed to the nines and dancing until she was out of breath. She loved to dress up and no matter the occassion she always had on one of her "signature" visors which she decorated with everything from flashy fabric to flowers and lace. She loved to make crafts and over the years everyone in the family was a recipient of her handmade gifts. She also loved to make candy during the holidays and every year talked the guys at the market out of enough of their new meat trays to pass her wonderful candy out to everyone in the family. She loved her little dog Buffy and took her everywhere with her. Buffy had her own special space in grandma's car and the two of them "burned-up" the roads of the valley setting up at craft fairs, going to yard sales or visiting old friends. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. We miss her much and think of her often. Buffy her beloved "poodle" who's dressed up for Mardi Gras in this video passed away a short time after grandma. I'm sure the two of them are "rippin and roarin" again with family members and friends going along for the adventure.
A humerous side note.....although we never really talked about the fact that grandma had been dipping snuff for all of her adult life while she was alive....It is very much a part of who she was....we didn't know when we were kids that all of our small drinking glasses were actually empty Garrett Snuff jars... some of which my daughters still use today....We also didn't know that the sweet scent you could smell when giving grandma a hug was her snuff ...ever present wherever grandma went...except church.....anyway...if you look at the picture of her in the pink shirt with her hands on her hips taken at our family Easter picnic....you can see that the pockets on both sides of that shirt were loaded with little containers of snuff.

  • So sorry to hear of your loss, there really is nothing more special in the world than the love of a grandma. I lost my grandma this year and was amazed to find out what the Bible really has to say about the condition of our dead loved ones. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 9:5, the Bible says that the dead are conscious of nothing at all, so I am happy to know my loved ones are just asleep in death and not suffering and the Bible promises a resurrection of our dear loved ones!
