@whatwhere Harbor Freight has them listed for $ 599.99 - they almost always have a 20% off offer on one item which you can use to bring that to $ 480.00. It's by far the best mill for the money and if plastic gears are stopping you from getting one then milling is not for you.

how come they don't put steel gears in there? i mean really you pay damn near 600+ dollars for a machine with plastic gears...that's basically what stopped me from buying one

Yep spilt the spindle gear! Question is how do you get it out? The lower bearing for my spindle is stuck!

Hi there before you go and install plastic gears again. You should install the belt conversion kit, it's a nice kit and you don't have to worry about any plastic gears.

That's what I wound up doing. After weighing the extra cost, versus the extra trouble of having to tear apart the headstock, the belt drive just made more sense. And so far, I'm quite happy with it.
